We all have been through a phase where we don’t wish to chase our dreams anymore. We start staying happy wherever in whichever situation we are. Being complacent with oneself means being happy and satisfied by yourself, and projecting a disinterest in learning new things and for working more hard.
Is this approach towards life healthy?
That’s debatable. Life is short and just passes by us. You will never know and someday you will find yourself standing old and faded out with age, wrinkles shining on your hands, and a mind filled with memories yearning for sharing experiences learned throughout life.
Why do we become complacent?
We all question our abilities and meaning of life.
- What changes can you make in the world?
- Is it even possible to change something?
- What can you achieve in a single life with no guarantee of a sudden death?
This is something we all must have thought about thousands of time. How can I? And it is absolutely fine to think so. You are right when you feel how a single person can make a dent in the whole universe. You are right when you think that eventually we all have to die and it doesn’t make sense to toil for years. These are few questions a healthy human mind will always think about.
Being complacent is not as bad as it seems to be. You are not always required to be critical of yourself. If we always criticize ourselves, how will we stay happy? We need some form of stability in life and the idea to always keep moving despite all odds is well, quite odd.
How do we now determine whether our outlook towards life is negative or not?
The other side of story: Chasing dreams
We all have dreams, some fulfilled and some left alone, silenced.
Someone wants to become an entrepreneur. Some wish to be an actor while a few wish to be the richest person in the world and someone wants to become a great writer. We all had a dream. Dreams are what makes life an interesting journey. They take us from one place to another. The wish to fulfill a dream makes us pass the uncharted territories, become more diligent and disciplined and learn things we never thought will do.
It is not wrong to say that without dreams, a human life is nothing but an empty jar. Completely lifeless, easy to end and cold. We live by our dreams and make life worth celebrating.
Dreams can sometimes be a pain too. Becoming too dreamy means having larger than life goals, being completely un-critical of one’s abilities to work, and chasing near to impossible desires.
Where does the problem arise?
The story takes a negative turn when you just don’t feel the heat of life. Maybe you have faced something very bad or are in a poor situation. Or maybe you have thought about all the above questions and couldn’t find a satisfactory answer. You don’t want to work harder, you don’t feel the need to learn something new and making changes in life becomes too uncomfortable.
When we are too tired of everything and don’t feel hungry for accomplishing more, it is the time when you need to intervene and ask few questions with yourself.
The Middle Game
So how do we balance ourselves between becoming complacent yet still dreaming?
Before moving ahead, ask yourself, am I being lazy? No one knows it better than you. Introspect your life, choices, substitutes and goals. Why are you standing here in this situation and what can be done better? The answers will surely leave you with a new outlook towards your life and help in making a clearer path.
- Set Impossible Goals
Yes, we all want to change the world. No, we all can’t do it.
Having unrealistic dreams leads towards sadness and un-satisfaction with life. What skills do you have? Are you sure about fulfilling your dream? Can it become a reality? If you feel you want to find the cure for cancer. That’s okay. You can get into science field and study hard, but if you have set an impossible goal of finding a cure within 6 months, well then it will always remain a dream. Living in a utopia is not good. Being honest about the situation will stop you from falling.
- Having Unreasonable Belief
It is beneficial to believe in oneself. Keeping faith is necessary to achieve your dreams. But having false beliefs within yourself while overlooking your weaknesses is a foreground of getting caught in mediocrity. Dishonesty with oneself leads towards no satisfaction with life.
- Dreams ≠ Happiness
Don’t join your happiness with goals. Goals are temporary. Life may have other plans for you and it might take you in a completely opposite direction. Live life with utmost sincerity, accepting and enjoying each and every moment of love, sorrow and joy.
We can balance our life. Just like a tasty dish which requires all ingredients on a limited scale, life too can be enjoyed by keeping oneself challenged and still remaining calm and happy.
Go ahead and do what you love!
